The US Dept. of Energy is a big fan of geothermal systems. DOE calls geothermal "The best system for our environment" and hopes to see geothermal installations increase ten fold each year.

Air source heat pumps are another excellent heating and cooling option with lower installation and purchase costs. Used in hundreds of homes in this area, air source heat pumps also heat and cool, but use energy trapped in the outside air instead of in the ground. Most air source systems cost the same as a furnace with central air, but because they are electric, there’s no soot, odor, flame, carbon monoxide, or chimney.
